‘Avengers’ Super Bowl teaser reveals airborne alien invaders

A 10-second Super Bowl ad for “The Avengers” has already racked up more than 1 million views after the filmmakers released the teaser during a Twitter chat with fans Tuesday.

“The Avengers” promo, which will air during the Super Bowl game Sunday, reveals a few new snippets from the upcoming film, including a quick scene showing a distressed Scarlett Johansson (who reprises her “Iron Man 2? role as Black Widow) and a glimpse of alien forces invading Earth, apparently on super speedy machines that resemble airborne jet-skis.

The film, slated for a May 4 release, unites the Marvel superheroes who have dominated the box office the last several summers. Robert Downey Jr. returns as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as villain Loki, Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye (who made a brief cameo in “Thor”) and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Mark Ruffalo joins the Marvel team as Bruce Banner, the scientist who becomes the Hulk.

“The Avengers” is directed and written by “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” creator Joss Whedon, who has his fair share of comics experience with the Dark Horse “Buffy” series and Marvel’s “Astonishing X-Men.” Also scheduled for a 2012 release are Whedon’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and “The Cabin in the Woods,” the latter of which Whedon co-wrote and produced.
