Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favreau will reunite on independent film Chef

Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr is to reunite with director Jon Favreau on the independent comedy Chef, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Favreau directed the first two films in the superhero saga and reprises his cameo role as Tony Stark’s bodyguard Happy Hogan in the hugely successful current third film in the series. He will take the lead role in Chef, which centres on a sacked restaurant worker who starts up a food truck to reclaim his artistic promise and simultaneously finds himself reclaiming his estranged family.

The film, which begins shooting next month in LA, also stars Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale. It is not yet known which role Downey Jr will play.

Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3, directed by series newcomer Shane Black, looks likely to break the $1bn mark at the global box office in the next few days after taking a gargantuan $72m in the US and $89.3m elsewhere at the weekend. It has currently made $948m across the world in just three weeks of release (two in north America) and could yet surpass the $1.5bn figure garnered by Marvel Studios predecessor The Avengers last year.

Favreau made his name in front of the cameras on the Doug Liman indie comedy drama Swingers, which he also wrote, in 1996, and has oscillated between directing and acting ever since. Despite the low-key nature of Chef, he maintains an interest in blockbuster film-making: future projects include the Disney film Magic Kingdom, about a family which travels to Disneyland and sees its famous inhabitants come to life

Robert Downey Jr. Joins Jon Favreau's Chef

Jon Favreau’s Chef is set to be a major scaling down in terms of production size, more of an indie affair the Cowboys & Aliens helmer is set to write, direct, and star in. Now Favreau’s Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. is coming aboard as well, taking an undisclosed role. Downey and Favreau will appear Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale. The plot details “a man who loses his chef job and starts up a food truck to reclaim his artistic promise and reclaiming his estranged family.” Filming begins in July in L.A.

'Avengers 2? Salary Standoff to Pit Robert Downey Jr. Against Marvel

With “Iron Man 3” already collecting $711 million at the global box office in its first two weeks, the question everyone wants to know the answer to is not only “when” but “if” Robert Downey Jr. will suit up as Iron Man for the planned sequel to “The Avengers.”

Though Downey would appear to have a lot of leverage when negotiating a new deal to star in “Avengers 2,” given the original pic grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, Deadline Hollywood reported Tuesday that the star and cast of the pic could be in for some hard-fought negotiations in the coming months. Marvel hopes to start production next year for a Dec. 2015 release.

Negotiations have not yet begun, and most of the cast were already in place for a sequel as part of their deals for the first film and previous Marvel projects. But Downey has hinted in numerous interviews, including a recent segment on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” in which he says his days of playing Tony Stark are over. He also added that if he were to return, he made clear he wasn’t about to take a pay cut.

But Downey could opt to move on, forcing Marvel to replace him. Marvel co-president Kevin Feige has said publicly he would replace Downey if need be.

If Downey walks away from “Avengers 2,” that could in turn spur a new round of renegotiations for the remaining cast, though they would not have much leverage considering whoever replaces Iron Man will not get close up to what they got from the previous installment.

And if Downey doesn’t suit up this time around, that doesn’t necessarily leave much room for renegotiation for other “Avengers 2? cast members, either. Marvel has imposed a hard line on this front in the past; when Terrence Howard held out for more money after the original “Iron Man,” Don Cheadle was brought in to replace him.

Most insiders believe it would be very tough to have anyone fill Downey’s shoes given how important he was not just to “Iron Man,” but to sparking other Marvel franchises in general. But the same could also be said when Andrew Garfield was asked to replace Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker after Maguire had built a billion-dollar “Spider-man” franchise.

For all the attention the Downey-Marvel faceoff is getting, this really isn’t an anomaly as studio-star negotiations go these days. When the contracts for the main cast members of “The Hunger Games” were being negotiated, most of those main players were receiving quotes of $1 million or less upfront, with a lot of emphasis being put on the back-end results.

When the pic became a smash hit, the cast returned to the negotiation table expecting more money upfront. Lionsgate didn’t put up much of a fight; most of the cast came out with a higher quote including Jennifer Lawrence, who raised her salary from $1 million upfront to $10 million.

But at this negotiation table, Iron Man may find Marvel has nerves of steel.

The star who plays billionaire Tony Starks says he is “humbled” by real-life innovators from around the country in the “Iron Man 3: Inventor and Innovator Fair”

HOLLYWOOD — Robert Downey Jr. came face-to-face with a stage full of true innovators on Friday.

As his billionaire inventor character Tony Stark and Iron Man 3 stormed through the U.S. box office, Downey surprised 12 finalists onstage at the “Iron Man 3: Inventor and Innovator Fair” at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theater.

The finalists in the nationwide competition looked amazed and shocked when Downey made the unannounced visit onstage, hands in the air giving the victory sign, following the awards ceremony. Students had flown in from around the country to accept the innovation honors for their work.

Downey congratulated the students, ranging from sixth to ninth grade.

“I hate to say this, but I’m humbled,” Downey said from the stage. “I congratulate all of you.”

“I am very pleased to be introducing the future design team of the next Tony Stark Iron Man suit,” Downey added.

Iron Man 3 was on par to make $60 million on its opening Friday following a stellar international opening last week. But Downey put the spotlight on the award-winning students.

Anin Sayana from Cupertino, Calif., was just one of the award-winning entries with an impressive title: “A Novel Configuration of Carbon Nanotubes to Inhibit ABCG2 and Selectively Target Chemotherapy-Resistant Cancer Stem Cells.”

“Iron Man is breaking records all over the world, but these are our big stars today,” Downey said.

“This whole series is about someone who invents something out of necessity. It’s nice entertainment,” he added. “But I am just so pleased to be part of the youth of America representing the things that are going to be keeping the planet sustainable and push technology and innovation forward for years to come.”

‘Iron Man 3’ star Robert Downey Jr. surprises Police Atheletic League kids at Daily News/Disney screening

Iron Man proved his mettle.

Actor Robert Downey Jr. played the hero Monday night, making an unannounced cameo at a special screening of “Iron Man 3,” co-hosted by Disney and the Daily News to honor teens from the Police Athletic League who volunteered to clean up Hurricane Sandy-ravaged areas around the city.

When his name was announced the 39 honored teens – as well as the several hundred fellow PAL members and family who thronged the gargantuan theater in Manhattan’s E-walk multiplex — the cheers and squeals were defeaning from the shocked crowd.

“I’m from New York and Tony Stark’s from New York, so I guess that means Iron Man’s from New York,” the actor, looking like a rock star in a white tuxedo jacket, sunglasses and silver sneakers, told the crowd.
